Changes in Trademark Law

3rd October 2007

Changes in the Trademark Laws came into force on 1st October 2007.

The UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) will no longer refuse trademark applications on the grounds that it might conflict with an exisiting trademark. Instead, it will examine UK trademarks as to whether thay are fitting and distinctive. This will speed up the trademarking process for businesses.

However, owners of existing trademarks now have to take responsibility for checking for potential infringements.

Further information about the changes in trademark law can be found on the UKIPO website
