NHS Staff to compete for Dragons Den-style funding

30th April 2009

Nurses and doctors will have the chance to compete for "Dragons Den-style" funding for inventions and other ideas to help patients under a new £220 million NHS fund.

All 10 strategic health authorities in England will be given between £2 and £5 million every year for the next five years to spend on innovations.  All NHS staff will be invited to put forward their ideas and the best ones will be chosen to be developed, possibly with involvement from industry.

Lord Darzi warned the NHS is in danger of losing future innovations because too many health workers think that their ideas will never be adopted.

Successful medical inventions pioneered in Britain include the disposable syringe, ultrasound scans and even the first modern hospice, set up by Cicely Saunders, a nurse, in 1967.
