Government closes IP advisory body
23rd July 2010
The Government's independent advisory body on intellectual property issues will close within a year. The Strategic Advisory Board on Intellectual Property (SABIP) will be abolished, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) has said.
Business secretary Vince Cable announced the closure of four bodies as part of BIS's wider aim to reduce the number of independent public bodies, or quangos.
SABIP reported to the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) and was established in 2008 to give impartial, evidence-based advice to the IPO. It was set up in response to a recommendation contained in Andrew Gowers's 2006 review of intellectual property.
SABIP's functions will now be carried out by the IPO.
